Through the HiWave-3 demonstration project a large scale (1:2) WEC system was designed, manufactured and tested in two steps between 2015 and 2018, first by dry Hardware-In-the-Loop rig testing in grid connected configuration (Stockholm) and then by sea trials at EMEC Scapa flow test site in a micro-grid configuration (Orkney).
The project was performed by a consortium consisting of CorPower Ocean, Iberdrola Engineering, EMEC, WavEC Offshore Renewables and the University of Edinburgh.
CorPower was the project lead responsible for device development and testing. EMEC was responsible for risk-assessment methodology and best practice support on deployment and testing, Iberdrola Engineering & Construction for the electrical specifications, design basis and LCOE input, and WavEC and University of Edinburgh for LCOE and numerical modelling. WavEC and EMEC have been responsible for analysis of the test results and dissemination.
The Stage 3 activities were funded by InnoEnergy, Wave Energy Scotland and the Swedish Energy Agency, with the HiDrive project being a subset of the HiWave-3 program.
